Register no later than Oct 28th, Competition day: November 7, 2020

The Space Innovation Challenge is a graduate-level, week-long case competition that helps you make an impact, meet new friends across campus and from other top universities, and mingle with leaders of the new space industry. The case prompt will go live on October 31st and you'll have all week to hack on a space-themed business problem for the event. The following Saturday, teams will pitch their solution to a team of leading professionals in the new space industry.

This year's event will be virtual, so you don't need to be in Pittsburgh to compete!

Due to current event policies in place at Carnegie Mellon University as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, all of this year's SIC activities will be held in a virtual format.

Frequently asked questions

Is the competition open to anyone?

Yes. While SIC is focused on solving business problems related to the space industry, you don't have to be a Tepper student to compete. Students from any graduate college are welcome and highly encouraged to attend. Each team may have a maximum of one undergraduate student. We welcome and have had many students from other universities compete at SIC. If you are not a Tepper student and want to get updates about SIC, or if you are part of a space related club at another school and want to be involved, please Contact Us!

Are we required to network with students across campus prior to attending the competition?

No, this is not required. You will have plenty of time to meet students from across campus at the team formation event on October 13th. If you have friends in other schools at CMU, other universities, or would like to begin networking prior to the event then that would only benefit you!

Are we permitted to join the competition with designated team members?

Yes, you are able to register with fully formed teams. If you want to compete but do not have a full team, please register and let us know you are open to joining other teams. If you have any additional questions, please Contact Us!

Can we still participate if we do not already have a team?

Yes, if you are interested in participating, but do not have a team, sign up with our individual registration form and we will help connect you to a team.

Is there a limit to the number of students per team?

Yes, the current limit is five students per team. You do not need five students on your team in order to compete. It is highly recommended that you have at least three team members from different schools or academic disciplines.

Is there a limit to the number of students from each school/college per team?

No. Teams with members from multiple disciplines will have the best chance at success, however. We recommend that teams have no more than two students from each school/college (all members may be from the same university).

When will the case prompt be released?

The official prompt will be released on October 31st and distributed via email to all registered teams.

Is it possible for my business idea to receive funding?

Yes! Sponsors often express interest in funding any ideas they believe may provide substantial value. If you’re a budding entrepreneur then this is an excellent opportunity for you.

What are the winning prizes?

There will be more than $3,000 in total prizes. Final prize amounts are still pending.
